CT GOP Gubernatorial Candidates Beg for Trump’s Endorsement as His Approval Craters to New Lows
Connecticut’s Republican gubernatorial candidates spent the past several days aggressively courting an endorsement from President Trump, even as the administration grapples with a disastrous war in Iran, economic instability, and dismal approval ratings. Trump’s approval has cratered to a second-term low in national polls – with only 31% approval and 65% disapproval in Connecticut.
Despite the President’s growing unpopularity, the GOP field remains committed to proving their MAGA bona fides and winning his favor.
Betsy McCaughey took to the stage at CPAC last week, declaring she “wanted to pay tribute to our Great President, Donald Trump, the most fearless, strongest President of our time” while successfully soliciting an endorsement from the ultraconservative group.
State Senator Ryan Fazio doubled down on his support during a recent interview on WTNH’s This Week in CT: “I would love the President’s endorsement,” Fazio stated,”I have a great deal of respect for his public service and his willingness to step up.”
Erin Stewart has not only stated she would be “proud” to receive Trump’s backing but continues to prominently feature imagery of herself with the President in her latest campaign literature, signaling a full embrace of the national GOP platform.
No Republican candidate has responded to a widely-panned rant by the President in which he said: “We’re fighting wars. We can’t take care of day care.” Trump also said that the federal government can’t pay for Medicare and called for states to raise their taxes to pay for it instead.
“The GOP field committed themselves fully to Donald Trump’s brand and the MAGA agenda,” added Ian Clarke, CT Dems spokesperson. “That decision has proven to be a strategic blunder and a moral disaster. Rather than pivot, they’ve doubled down on their race to the far right. They fight against common-sense gun regulation, cheer on cuts to health care and SNAP, and remain silent as their leader wages a senseless war. How can Connecticut voters trust people who are so clearly auditioning for the loudest, most extreme voices in their party?”
